Russell Shipman- Career profile

Raised in a family with a long line of fishing experience and a father who skippered trawlers for 30 years since the day I could walk I have been going to sea. Leaving school at 16 to chase a career in the fishing industry I spent 5 years up and down the Queensland coast as a deckhand on my fathers prawn trawler.

After serving my apprenticeship as a decky I had accumulated enough sea time to sit for my Master Class 5 skippers ticket and professional fisherman’s licence at the age of 21. For the next 3 years I was Master of a number of Fishing vessels before deciding there must be more to life than fishing.

Drawing on the experience I had gained over the 8 years full time at sea I decided to have a go at passing my knowledge onto others and joined the Australian Boating College in 1996 as boat licence instructor. Deciding that this was my calling I became owner of ABC Gold Coast.

In my time as a boating instructor I have taught over 5000 students wishing to obtain their recreational boat licence. I have also been employed by the Australian Maritime Training Centre for the past 5 years as their senior facilitator and assessor for commercial maritime operations training hundreds of people to gain skippers qualifications in the boating industry.

In the 18 years I have been employed in this industry, nothing gives me more pleasure than at the end of a course when you issue a student their certificate of competency and see the smile on their face and you know you are sending another safe boatie out on the water.
